My Bio

I'm a Poetic Naturalist living in western Pennsylvania. My interests range from science and naturalism to music, literature, poetry and philosophy. I live an earthen spirituality with roots in Celtic mysticism, western monasticism and Neo-Paganism. My 'art' is writing; poetry and prose. I create researched accounts on various topics, reflective essays and fictional works; the latter set in my fictional world of "Ross County, PA." My blog is https://montaguewhitsel.blogspot.com. I love seeing new artwork, meditating on it and letting it take me where it will. So many creative people here! Glad to be able to sojourn among you.

As to photography, I have been using a camera since I was about 8 years old, and though an untrained amateur and what used to be called a 'shutterbug,' I have mainly used photography to document places I want to remember -- for poetic and personal reasons -- and then to go deeper into them, exploring details and 'framing' them (with the camera) as I can with no special equipment. The 'found still life' is a particular fascination with me. I occasionally take a photograph that stands out from the menagerie, and it is from among these that I may share here. _I hope you enjoy my meager offerings, and I look forward to any response you may have to offer.

Blessed be!

A story of a day in which apparitions in the woods occurred to Edward Whittier and three of his drumming students. This is a fictional tale set in my imaginative world, in which one of the myths I learned when I was first introduced to Paganism and the is realized in a way that I've always fantasized it could 'happen' to someone in the right circumstances. Tonight is Eostre -- according to those who taught me -- the first Full Moon after the Vernal; Equinox, and is the mythic time of the Pookah; an avatar of the Earth Goddess. Blessed be in the Greening of the Vernaltides! May the Full Moon shine on you tonight, and bring you imaginative power and fecundity. Sincerely, Montague Whitsel

[An Ecumenical Pagan Approach] This old book of mine is narrated by three Neo-Pagan practitioners living together in an old Victorian house in the fictional town of Wickersfeld PA.As the ‘authors’ of the book, they present the reader with a calendar through which to observe and participate in the Winter Solstice Season, in all of its mystery and magical possibilities, often relating their own experiences and practices in the process. The calendar draws upon Pagan symbolism, myth and practices as re-envisioned by these characters for a late 20th century poetic, spiritual and mystical journey. The “Thirteen Dayes of Yule” – 13 to 25 December – are at the heart of this imaginative calendar. Each day is identified with a particular evergreen, which functions as a ‘taproot’ for the lore, symbols and practices associated with that day. The ‘authors’ are practitioners in what I call “The Keltelven Traditions;” a fictional Paganism; the primary thrust of which is the seeking of Wisdom.
